New Traralgon Campus

Following several months of discussions, the boards of Flinders Christian Community College and Chairo Christian School announced to their respective school communities on Monday 12 September that the Flinders’ campus in Traralgon will become a Chairo campus from the start of 2018.

The campus is currently a satellite school of Flinders’ other campuses on the Mornington Peninsula. David Flack, the Flinders Board Chairman, explained that in recent years, given the distance between campuses, “maintaining the conditions necessary to ensure a quality and sustainable education program has become challenging”.

A shared commitment to the cause of Christian education, regardless of the name on the front gate, was the key factor underpinning the process that occurred. Mr Flack commented: “Our ultimate goal was to ensure the ongoing provision and viability of Christian education in the Latrobe Valley for many generations to come. We came to the final decision that the best option was to transfer the campus to a schooling community that was better positioned to provide excellent Christian education in the region.”

Chairo Executive Principal explained: “Although we hadn’t anticipated expanding into the Latrobe Valley, God seems to be opening doors for Chairo to play an integral role in delivering Christian education in this part of Victoria. Our current intention is to operate Chairo Traralgon as a Kindergarten to Year 8 campus, with the parents of Years 9 to 12 students being encouraged to send their children at our Drouin Campus.”

This transition to Senior School at Drouin will actually commence in 2017, with Year 11 not being offered at Traralgon. Chairo currently operate buses from the Traralgon and Yinnar areas and already has students from the Latrobe Valley attending the Drouin Campus. There is potential for many more families in the region to discover the benefits of Christian education.

Mr Bray said, “While a lot of work needs to be done before the first day of the 2018 school year, we are confident of achieving a smooth transition and worthwhile outcome. Of course, this is not completely new territory for us, having successfully managed the transition of the Leongatha Campus from South Coast Christian College to Chairo from the start of 2014”.
