A talented and dedicated cast and crew of seventy students from Years 6 to 12 rehearsed after school twice a week for almost seven months leading up to the Drouin Campus presentation of The Sound of Music at the West Gippsland Arts Centre.
The four performances, under the direction of Tracey Gaylard, were enthusiastically received and the buzz around the foyer indicated that audiences went away moved and thoroughly entertained by what they had experienced.
Janine Howe, well-known for her performances on stage at the WGAC, was in the audience on opening night. She commented there was so much to love about the production, describing it as thoroughly enjoyable. “At times, I forgot I was watching a school production.”
Janine explained: “The whole cast was great and all the leads were fabulous, including Tiffany St Mart as Maria, Juandre Swanepoel as Captain von Trapp, Kayla Crook as Elsa (what a voice!) and Daniel Ritchie as Max, and the orchestra was simply outstanding—as good as any professional orchestra.”
Judith St Mart created amazing costumes with assistance from other parents. The singing was excellent under the guidance of Jason Ward and the large orchestra, conducted by Paul Ellis, played with passion and vibrancy.
